Topic is Christianity, Person talking is C.S. Lewis

We are told that Christ was killed for us, that his death has washed out our sins, and that by dying he disabled death itself. That is the formula. That is Christianity. That is what has to be believed. C. S. Lewis

President Lincoln and a clergyman praying together at the White House

Prayer

But for Those Prayers, We Should Have Failed

A clergyman from New York, during a call on President Lincoln at the White House said: “I have not come to ask any favors of you, Mr. President; I have only come to say that the loyal people of the North are sustaining you and will continue to do so. We are giving you all that we have, the lives of our sons as well as our confidence and our prayers. You must know that no boy’s father or mother ever kneels in prayer these days without asking God to give you strength and wisdom.” His eyes brimming with tears, Mr. Lincoln replied: “But for those prayers, I should have faltered and perhaps failed long ago. Tell every father and mother you know to keep on praying, and I will keep on fighting, for I know God is on our side.” As the clergyman started to leave the room, Mr. Lincoln held him by the hands and said: “I suppose I may consider this as sort of a pastoral call?” “Yes,” replied the clergyman. “Out in our country,” replied Lincoln, “when a parson makes a pastoral call, it was always the custom for the folks to ask him to lead in prayer, and I should like to ask you to pray with me today. Pray that I may have the strength and the wisdom.” The two men knelt side by side, and the clergyman offered the most fervent plea to Almighty God that ever fell from his lips. As they arose, the President clasped his visitor’s hand and remarked in a satisfied sort of way: “I feel better.”

The King's Seat

Mercy
The King’s Seat
Alexander the Great once found a private in his army fainting and sick with the cold air around him, and had him carried and seated down in his own royal seat in his tent by a fire. The soldier, coming to his senses, suddenly sprang to his feet amazed and began to apologize. Alexander smiled to the young soldier and said, “Don’t you know that your Macedonians live after another manner under your kings than your enemies the Persians do. For them it is death to sit in the king’s chair; but to you, it became life.” As believers, we have a hope that as our strength fails, Christ reminds us of His care. The world and Satan have an unruly kingdom which to be followed will mean certain separation from God. But to be enlisted in God’s army, is to know the joy of His merciful care for us. https://app.logos.com/books/LLS%3A22.0.9/offsets/1806305?layout=reading&tile=right

How did Guttenberg decide to start, then start to destroy, then stop destroying the printing press he invented? He heard voices.

Consecrated to Good Purpose When Guttenberg was working in his chamber in St. Abersgot Monastery, he heard a voice warning him that his invention would be the great engine of evil whereby bad men would broadcast the seeds of sin and crime, and so, posterity would curse the man who invented the printing press. He took a hammer, and was actually breaking the type and matrices in pieces when he heard another voice bidding him desist, and declaring that God would use it still more mightily to the spread of His saving truth, and so for the eternal blessing of mankind. So our work is not to destroy the instruments that we use in the service of sin, but make them now the servants of righteousness. Grace can turn a curse into blessing, a fount of bitterness into a fount of life eternal.

Whose work is it?

Prov.16:3 The best way to insure that our dreams and goals will be achieved is to dedicate our works to the Lord. J. Allen Blair advises: Occasionally we find ourselves disturbed and depressed, even in trying to do the Lord’s work. Could anything be further from what God desires? God cannot work through anxious hearts. Whenever a Christian reaches this state, he should stop at once and ask himself, “Whose work is it?” If it’s God’s work, never forget the burden of it is His, too. You are not the important person. Christ is! He is at work through us. What should we do then when things do not go well? Go to Him! Anything less than this is disobedience. Prayer: “Give me the eye which sees God in all, and the hand which can serve Him in all, and the heart which can bless Him for all” (Daily Notes). William MacDonald, Believer’s Bible Commentary: Old and New Testaments, ed. Arthur Farstad (Nashville: Thomas Nelson, 1995), 831.
