Did Nikodemus accept Jesus?

The Jewish Gospel of John is not, by any standard, another book on Jesus of Nazareth written from a Jewish perspective. It is an invitation to the reader to put aside their traditional understanding of the Gospel of John and to replace it with another one more faithful to the original text perspective. The Jesus that will emerge will provoke to rethink most of what you knew about this gospel. The book is a well-rounded verse-by-verse illustrated rethinking of the fourth gospel. Here is the catch: instead of reading it, as if it was written for 21 century Gentile Christians, the book interprets it as if it was written for the first-century peoples of ancient Israel. The book proves what Krister Stendahl stated long time ago: “Our vision is often more abstracted by what we think we know than by our lack of knowledge.” Other than challenging the long-held interpretations of well-known stories, the author with the skill of an experienced tour guide, takes us to a seat within those who most probably heard this gospel read in the late first century. Such exploration of variety of important contexts allows us to recover for our generation the true riches of this marvelous Judean gospel.

Are you from France? Can you help?

Are you from France? Can you help?  1

Dear friends and family,

Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg with an unusual request. A while back, you may remember my appeal for prayers for Arn Livshitz, the son of my lifelong friend, Dar Livshitz, from Odessa, Ukraine (I know we are all sick and tired hearing about this war that has dragged on for more than 500 days).

The Livshitz family had to leave Ukraine due to the war, and they are now living in Lasalle, France as temporary refugees hoping to return home when war will be over.

(The other Ukrainian family for whom I sought help (some of you may recall that) previously has successfully found refuge in Germany, thanks to the kindness of my students in response to a similar letter about a year ago.)

Returning to the Livshitz family, during their stay in France, it was tragically discovered that Arn has a brain tumor. Thankfully, he underwent successful surgery at a French hospital, but he lost his sight as a post-surgery complication. His treatment is ongoing. While they are not financially destitute and do have a source of income, they face a different challenge.

The crux of the matter is this: Arn's parents, who are currently renting an apartment in Lasalle, fairly urgently need to move to Montpellier, to be closer to Gui de Chauliac Hospital. But they have a non-financial problem.

I am reaching out to my network of friends, followers, and former students in the hope that someone might have or know of an apartment for rent within a 30km radius of Montpellier. You might wonder why they do not simply look for a place through local online listings. The issue is that local landlords require a local guarantor to ensure rent payment, and they do not have anyone who can do this for them. If I were in France, I would gladly stand as guarantor, but I am not.

I am, therefore, seeking your assistance. Even if you don't live in France (most of you don't!), perhaps you know someone who does, or a church that could possibly assist with this locally in around Montpellier area.

If you have a way to help with this somehow, please, send me a direct email to elil@eteachergroup.com with the subject line: YES, POSSIBLY. You and I (and them) can then arrange a ZOOM meeting to discuss further, if relevent.

For everyone else, your prayers for the Livshitz family would be greatly appreciated. I know that you care and will pray!

In His Firm Grip,

Dr. Eli Lizorkin-Eyzenberg
