Devotional: A Heart Set Free

There is a kind of real freedom that comes when God sets our heart free.

December 25, 2023 A Heart Set Free Psalm 119:32 I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.     WEB      What does it mean to be free? Does it mean that you just do anything you please at any time? That you throw off all order and restraint, you're just self-indulgent, self-pleasing, self-willed. Let me tell you, friend, and I speak from personal experience, in my own life and in the lives of many others whom I've counseled from time to time, that's not real freedom. That's slavery. It's slavery to self and it's slavery to sin.      But there is a kind of real freedom that comes when God sets our heart free. The psalmist says, "You've set my heart free." What's the evidence? "I run in the path of your commands." When we are truly liberated by the grace of God and the power of God, it's not to please ourselves, it's not to do our own thing, but it's to be able to obey God and be able to obey Him with delight, to obey Him with readiness, not reluctantly, not grudgingly, but freely and joyfully.      The psalmist says, "I run in the path of your commands": I'm not trying to find excuses for disobeying. I just long to know what Your will is. And when I discover Your will, I run in that pathway. There's a note of eagerness, a note of excitement, that comes – not from pleasing self, but from seeking to please God, from doing His will. Merry Christmas, From Live Action

Christmas is a time of hope. I find it profound to think about the fact that hope came to humanity in the form of a Child. 

Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones!   Christmas is a time of hope. I find it profound to think about the fact that hope came to humanity in the form of a Child.    We often see images of the Holy Family where everything looks peaceful and idyllic. There is a glow around Joseph and Mary, emanating from Baby Jesus. The animals are all looking upon the Child…   While this dream-like imagery does speak of the profundity of that occurrence, it can make it easy to forget that what Joseph and Mary experienced was less than ideal.    They had to make a long, tiresome journey to protect the life of the Baby growing inside Mary. They were turned away from all of the inns. Mary gave birth among dirty animals.   Yet the joy of the birth of Jesus overcame all of these inconveniences… and has continued to do so for over two thousand years.    RICHARD, whenever you think about the problem of abortion, think about the Holy Family and the reason why we celebrate Christmas every year. Think about how they faced questions, setbacks, and inconveniences, yet they did not let fear hinder their trust in God's mysterious plan.    Think about the joy of a new life that surpasses any obstacle, if only we have the courage to see that reality.    Today, on Christmas, let us rejoice in the gift of life, in the gift of each other.
