The Severity of Jesus
Jesus said some things that sound so hard and impossible that, if we read them apart from other things He said, they might discourage anyone from even trying to follow Him. He came to bring us the priceless gift of everlasting life, but He will not force it on us. The primary condition on which we may receive eternal life is that we want it more than we want anything else, and that we love Him more than we love anything else. Jesus requires, and must have, the first place in our hearts. If He has that, His mercy is infinite.
