Jesus broke bread with his disciples in the upper room (Lk 22:19)

klaō takes on religious significance when Jesus broke bread with his disciples in the upper room (Lk 22:19). This event was not intended to be a one-time experience, for he commanded his disciples to keep doing it in remembrance of him. As time passed, the breaking of bread became synonymous with the Lord’s Supper. Paul argues that the breaking of bread with other believers is a “participation in the body of Christ” (1 Cor. 10:16). And since the risen Christ also broke bread with his disciples before the ascension (Lk 24:30), the breaking of bread in the Lord’s Supper may also have served to them as a reminder that their Lord was now risen (Lk 24:35; Acts 10:41). So should it for us—a reminder of Jesus’ death and resurrection. See NIDNTT-A, 307.
