The Affections
The Affections should be supremely set upon God.
Deut 6:3 Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you—’a land flowing with milk and honey.’
Ps 42:1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So pants my soul for You, O God.
Ps 73:25 Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.
Ps 119:10 With my whole heart I have sought You; Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments!
Mark 12:30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment.
Should be set
Upon the commandments of God.
Ps 19:8–10 The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, Yea, than much fine gold; Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Ps 119:20 My soul breaks with longing For Your judgments at all times.
Ps 119:97 Oh, how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.
Ps 119:103 How sweet are Your words to my taste, Sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Ps 119:167 My soul keeps Your testimonies, And I love them exceedingly.
Upon the house and worship of God.
1 Chr 29:3 Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver:
Ps 26:8 Lord, I have loved the habitation of Your house, And the place where Your glory dwells.
Ps 27:4 One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, And to inquire in His temple.
Ps 84:1–2 How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts! 2 My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.
Upon the people of God.
Ps 16:3 As for the saints who are on the earth, “They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.”
Rom 12:10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another;
2 Cor 7:13–15 Therefore we have been comforted in your comfort. And we rejoiced exceedingly more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have boasted to him about you, I am not ashamed. But as we spoke all things to you in truth, even so our boasting to Titus was found true. 15 And his affections are greater for you as he remembers the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling you received him.
1 Thess 2:8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.
Upon heavenly things.
Col 3:1–2 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Should be zealously engaged for God.
Ps 69:9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
Ps 119:139 My zeal has consumed me, Because my enemies have forgotten Your words.
Gal 4:18 But it is good to be zealous in a good thing always, and not only when I am present with you.
Christ claims the first place in.
Matt 10:37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.
Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.
Energized by communion with Christ.
Luke 24:32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
Blessedness of making God the object of.
Ps 91:14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
Should not grow cold.
Ps 106:12–13 Then they believed His words; They sang His praise. 13 They soon forgot His works; They did not wait for His counsel,
Matt 24:12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.
Gal 4:15 What then was the blessing you enjoyed? For I bear you witness that, if possible, you would have plucked out your own eyes and given them to me.
Rev 2:4 Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.
Of the wicked, not sincerely set on God.
Is 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
Is 58:1–2 “Cry aloud, spare not; Lift up your voice like a trumpet; Tell My people their transgression, And the house of Jacob their sins. 2 Yet they seek Me daily, And delight to know My ways, As a nation that did righteousness, And did not forsake the ordinance of their God. They ask of Me the ordinances of justice; They take delight in approaching God.
Ezek 33:31–32 So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. 32 Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.
Matt 15:8–9 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. 9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”
Luke 8:13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.
Carnal affections should be mortified.
Rom 8:13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Rom 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
1 Cor 9:27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
Col 3:5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
1 Thess 4:5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
Carnal affections crucified in saints.
Rom 6:6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
Gal 5:24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
False teachers seek to captivate.
Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.
Gal 4:17 They zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them.
2 Tim 3:6 For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts,
2 Pet 2:3 By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.
2 Pet 2:18 For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error.
Rev 2:14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality.
Rev 2:20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.
Of the wicked, are unnatural and perverted.
Rom 1:31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful;
2 Tim 3:3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good,
2 Pet 2:10 and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries,
