When Jesus left the earth, He left the task of extending His kingdom in the hands of His followers empowered by the Holy Spirit. The first time Jesus sent them out, He “gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease” (Matt. 10:1). He later told an expanded group of disciples, “Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19). By using that power, they were to declare and manifest the kingdom of God. They were to “Go … and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19–20).
